Spring began on March 20th, despite the gray skies in April. Some sense uplifting spirits around this time, especially on sunny days after the long winter blues season.
During the winter season, 10-20% of Americans experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This disorder is characterized by depression, low energy, and increased sleep.
After moving out from the winter season, the reason behind spring being the best season for mental clarity is the vitamin D. Vitamin D is a vitamin most Americans lack during the winter season since of the lack of sunlight.
The science behind how Vitamin D is the reason for spring being the best season for mental clarity is the connection between vitamin function within the brain. The vitamin receptors exist in the central nervous system, which is in a region where mood is regulated. Which is why, when this region of the brain is activated these receptors cause production and action of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine – which are known as the “feel-good hormones”.
Ethan Valentine, a sophomore, said “Spring is the end of winter. The end of the cold, the start of vibrant, uplifting weather.”
Thaddeus Shradley, a sophomore, said “Spring is my most unfocused time…with sports, finals, and AP tests and what not, but what I would say is the weather is nice and that can definitely help with mental clarity. Being outside and enjoying better weather by taking breaks or having fun with friends outside can be nice.”
