The Florida Gators beat the Houston Cougars in the Men’s Basketball National Championship on Monday.
The game truly went down to the final play, with Florida coming out on top 65-63. The Gators even trailed the cougars by 12 points early in the second half, rallying a one-of-a-kind comeback.
The Houston Cougars defense, often referred to as the greatest defensive team in the country, held the Gators back effectively, especially Walter Clayton Jr., the Gators star guard.
As they did often throughout the tournament, the Gators found a way to rally themselves back in the game, and went on a 15-3 run to tie up the game.
Florida didn’t maintain a lead until the final minute of play. The team’s tight defensive tactics is what sealed their third national championship. This was the team’s first national championship after going back to back in 2006 to 2007.
Lifelong Florida Gators fan Emily Miller said that, “I knew they were going to win this game.”
The Gators’ coach, Todd Golden, made history ranking among the top ten youngest coaches to ever win a Men’s Basketball National Championship.
“He truly is young but so smart about this game,” said sophomore Sadie Borrelli.
The Gators are already projected in a few early predictions to win back-to-back championships in the upcoming season.
