Everyone has either seen the broadway show “Wicked” or at least heard of it. “Wicked” has now been released in theaters as a movie on November 24, 2024 and in just the past two weeks it has made $469 million in the box office.
However, the real question is if it’s really good or is it as good as the “Wicked” musical? Without giving any spoilers away, there is a part two movie for the “Wicked” movie that was released, which a few people say they liked about and some didn’t like it.
“Wicked” as the musical was first performed on June 10, 2003 and the two main characters Glinda was played by Kristen Chenoweth and Elphaba was played by Idina Menzel. These two actresses have been iconic for their part in this musical, which they are so just very well known.
Compared with the movie, “Wicked”, the two main characters Glinda, who was played by Ariana Grande and Elphaba was played by Cynthia Erivo. Both of these actresses have had a very successful career, especially Ariana Grande already having a singer career.
The big difference between the two versions of “Wicked” is that in the movie version it has been said to have a second part to the movie since the creators expanded more on characters and their stories. However, it has been said that the musical side of it isn’t as good as the musical version.
I asked two LD students who have watched the movie and their thoughts between the movie version and the musical.
Wren White, a senior, said “The musical is better, the movie drags at points compared to the musical.”
Beth Tylwalk, a senior said “This is one of the good movies that got turned from musical to movie, compared to others such as “Mean Girls” musical movie that wasn’t as good.”
