As an avid enjoyer of the indie-pop music genre, I consider myself to be extremely well-versed in its main artists. Groups like Boygenius, Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala, Beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, Adrianne Lenker, and Chappell Roan are some of the more notable figures in the genre today. However, I believe that there is one artist who has not only been less recognized than deserved but has also only skimmed the surface of their potential, and that artist is Searows.
Alec Duckart, more commonly known as Searows, is an American singer/songwriter from Oregon. His work features slower songs, with haunting melodies and incredibly powerful symbolism within his lyrics.
While Searows probably wouldn’t be considered an “underground” or even “underrecognized” artist, I would say that they are underrated, being in fierce competition with artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Adrienne Lenker for some of the best lyricism in the entirety of modern music.
With songs like “House Song”, “I have more than enough” and “Keep The Rain”, Searow’s experimental usage of quotidian sounds and harmonies creates an almost- transcendent auditory experience.
There are several songs that I would love to go back and listen to for the first time, but “I have more than enough” might be a close second to “Scott Street” by Phoebe Bridgers, beating out many songs from her discography, which is no easy feat.
“I haven’t heard any of their songs except a small clip from ‘House Song’ on TikTok, but from what I heard they have a unique voice,” says senior Aryam Agili-Shaban.
“I like their song ‘Older’, and I’ve listened to their first album a couple of times and I agree that they deserve more attention, especially to that first album,” says senior Addie Whitmyer.
Overall, Searows is an amazing artist and deserves more flowers for their work. They recently announced their second album titled Flush, make sure to give it a listen!
