On November 13th the PLL (Premier Lacrosse League) announced that they would be launching a new league called the WLL (Women’s Lacrosse League), which will debut at the 2025 PLL Championship Series.
Paul Rabil, the co-founder of the PLL, which was created back in 2018, is promoting the new league in the PLL championship series. This will bring all the best women’s lacrosse players from around the world to compete in the same league. On December 10th, the WLL announced the four teams that will be competing in the first year. These teams are the Boston Guard, California Palms, New York Charging, and Maryland Charm.
The four main ambassadors for the WLL are some of the top women’s lacrosse players consisting of Charlotte North, Izzy Scane, Alex Aust Holman, and Lizzie Colson. All of them have played the game at the most elite levels and seek to create the future of lacrosse for women. After the PLL’s quick success in the U.S. and gaining many young fans the only logical thing to do is create the same atmosphere for girls who play lacrosse. This gives more opportunities for girls to become more exposed to the game and will hopefully get more people to pick up a stick and start playing.
Many of the girls lacrosse players are excited for the upcoming league and believe it is going to expand the sport across the nation. Isa Medlin, a freshman on the team, says, “The women’s lacrosse league shows how women can bond over their love and competitiveness for the game.” Emily Miller, a junior on the team, says, “Charlotte North has always been a prominent player and I hope to see her grow the sport even more.”
Paul Rabil has really been the godfather of modern day lacrosse and this women’s league is just the next step to lacrosse becoming one of the most popular sports in the United States. After all, lacrosse is the oldest sport in America; there’s no reason we shouldn’t embrace the game that the Native Americans passed onto us. Overall, the WLL will take time to grow, but once it gains a following, they’ll be millions of girls asking for their first lacrosse stick.
