Some say that reading maintains a person’s intelligence, making it an important hobby for students to keep up with. However, many students contest that they think reading is boring and takes too much time. Why do students think this and are they right?
An important part of reading is finding a genre that you like. So many people turn away from reading because they think it will be boring, but they just haven’t found the right genre yet. At Lower Dauphin, people from all different grades read all different genres(pictured in chart), even though they all read, they don’t all like the same material.
While reading may just be a hobby it can have many long term benefits such as maintaining or building a high IQ score. It also exposes you to more ideas and language, broadening your horizons.
“The more you read the larger your perspective becomes, your vocabulary expands, yeah it’s important” says Mrs. Maggs, ninth grade English teacher.
When a student writes a paper for school, they may find they become repetitive in their word usage. Reading may help open up your vocabulary and allow you to perform better on assignments.
Sports are an important part of many students’ lives. They spend hours each week practicing so they can perform their best during competition. Even so, it is important to take breaks and save time for hobbies, like reading.
“School and reading are important and should come before sports, both are really important though” says ninth grader Macie Popp.
People may believe that just because they don’t read now, they won’t ever be able to get into it.
“Reading is good if I can find a certain type of book that I like, but if I can’t find one it won’t interest me enough to continue,” says ninth grader Zoe Wisniewski.
Reading does not have to be a steady activity, rather a loose hobby. It does not matter if you are reading currently or not, you can pick up a book at any time.
Reading is never something that should feel forced. It should be a way to destress, a way to gain knowledge, or a way to chase off boredom. Many think that reading means completing book after book, but any person can take as long as they need. So next time you feel the need to mindlessly scroll or watch a movie, read some old book you have lying around instead, see how you like it.
