Anthony Edwards. If you’ve been watching the NBA recently, it’s likely you’ve heard the name of this 22 year old superstar. Maybe you’ve seen his signature shoes, which some are calling the 2024 “sneaker of the year”. Perhaps you’ve heard the rumors in which fans jokingly call him Michael Jordan’s secret son. If you’ve been following the Timberwolves closely recently, then it is very likely you’ve seen Edwards in his team’s series against the Denver Nuggets, where they are (2-0).
The Timberwolves recently demolished the Denver Nuggets in game 2 of their series, only adding to Anthony Edwards’ growing stardom. The Timberwolves shooting guard has been compared to Michael Jordan, and frankly I can see it. He has a captivating playing style, awesome signature footwear, and a likeable personality. All of these contribute to his image of being similar to Jordan.
First, his play style. Edwards has said that he will “kill whatever is in front of him”, and so far he’s told the truth. The Timberwolves are plowing through their playoff adversaries, in part due to Edwards extraordinary skill both offensively and defensively. In fact, the entire reason I got into basketball is due to Edwards. His playing style is just so fun and refreshing to watch!
Next, Edwards’ signature footwear. The Adidas AE 1 has been stirring up the sneaker scene in a way reminiscent of the release of the Air Jordan 1 (or to a lesser extent, LeBron’s shoes). They have ignited a comedic debate on whether they can be worn with jeans, and many are calling the AE 1 the 2024 “sneaker of the year”. As an owner of the AE 1, I can confirm that it both performs well on court as well as looks great off of it.
Finally, Edwards is a likeable guy. His mannerisms and reactions on court are a spectacle, and he’s hilarious when mic’d up. Unlike more controversial figures such as Ja Morant, Edwards seems to be an easygoing guy who just happens to be one of the greatest players in the NBA.
Lower Dauphin students are conflicted. Junior Seth Kazinski says that Edwards “definitely plays like Jordan”. Senior Ethan Kurtz believes that Edwards still has to prove himself before he can be compared to the GOAT. “I think Anthony Edwards has a long way to go until he can truly be compared to the greatest of all time,” He said. “Like Jordan, though, Edwards has hit some very crucial shots for his team down the postseason stretch this season.” Whether you agree with Kurtz about Edwards or not, there’s one thing we can all agree on: Edwards is never beating the MJ’s son allegations.
