As pickleball sweeps the nation, more and more young people are becoming involved with the sport, extending to LD students of all backgrounds.
Senior Heidi Bretz says that “pickleball is such a fun and different way to stop being a screenager and spend quality time with your friends and family.”
The sport, which is played with paddles, is comparable to a smaller-court tennis, and provides an easy way for people to exercise and socialize. Originally, pickleball was most popular among the older population, but recently it has trickled down to college and highschoolers as well.
Pickleball has many qualities that attract a younger demographic. It is a great excuse to spend time outside being active, is relatively simple to play and understand, provides a great opportunity to socialize with other people, and, as senior Brett DeBell notes, is both affordable and accessible.
“Rackets are very cheap, and there are a ton of public courts in the area.”
With warmer weather on the horizon, playing pickleball with friends has become a common activity among LD students. It is not uncommon for large groups of friends to be out on both the weekends and during the week, enjoying the free local courts and social experiences. It is also an opportunity for students to mingle with other people that they do not talk to often, forming new friendships as summer approaches.
