We all like to reminisce about something from our childhood from shows to toys. This is well known as nostalgia. It could be characterized as a good thing, but sometimes it can turn into a not so good thing.
Previously, nostalgia was considered a disorder and doctors gave people medication for it, however, they had come to terms it was something that occurred to everyone.
Nostalgia can be helpful when one is feeling down such as little things from their past or growing up could boost their mood. Yet, it can cause depression and loneliness to a person who keeps being drawn into the nostalgia state of mind.
Benefits of feeling nostalgia are a sense of self, strengthening family or friend relationships and emotional stability. This can be a healthy and good thing for a person’s mental health, and along with that, boosting the person’s mood.
However the downside of feeling nostalgia is sadness about the times that do not exist anymore in the present as well as anxiety or worrying about the present time they are in since they are longing for the past memories.
Junior Keshav Thapa, said that she gets nostalgia from “Laying down on a fresh smooth set of snow gives me nostalgia from when me and my best friend at the time made an ice igloo.”
A senior, Jaxon Jones, said “Silly Bandz because I used to own a couple, along with those grow-in-water animal type things you get from the arcade or those tiny ninja toys that cost like a quarter.”
