Jojo Siwa is back, and reinvention is an understatement for her new persona.
She has quickly embraced the publicity of her new single “Karma,” and fans are left slightly confused, and highly concerned.
Jojo Siwa, a former star on the show “Dance Moms” that features the realities of competition dance as a young child has continuously been in the spotlight, mostly being known for her child-friendly music, like “Boomerang” and “Kid in a Candy Store.” These songs promoted things like anti-bullying, standing up to negativity and embracing your differences. However, things took an unexpected turn when Jojo decided that being a child-friendly content creator was no longer in her field of interest, and began to adopt a new look.
The single, “Karma,” talks about the betrayal made by an unfaithful party in a relationship, and how she is experiencing the consequences of her misdeeds when seeing her former girlfriend and her new partner.
While the song has garnered lots of attention for being, simply put, a terrible song, it is more of Jojo’s new adopted style that leaves fans confused. She has adopted a slightly more emo-chic look, wearing dramatic eye makeup and dramatic costumes. Her recent dancing in her music videos has also left fans distraught, with her movements being described as both aggressive and erratic.
Junior Jaime Gallick describes it as “purely for shock factor, and not artistic in any way,” as well as sophomore Anushka Verma describing the “effect of Jojo Siwa’s persona on society as repellant.”
Some fans think that the reinvention is less of a self-discovering epiphany, and more of a complex publicity stunt to try and make Siwa relevant again. Junior Tavian Boone describes it as seeming extremely “fake and manufactured.”
Overall, the exclusion of children from Siwa’s fan base have left the public highly confused as to who she is trying to appeal to. Even so, the public (and whatever fans Siwa has left) await her next project, not with anticipation, but with mild anxiety.
