Many people characterize Taylor Swift’s career by her talent in writing songs, especially those that center around love or romance. While her other songs are underappreciated by many people, her love songs are certainly something that have helped catapult her into immense success. A few of these songs especially stand out as testaments to a purer form of romance than is often found in popular music.
1. “You Are In Love (Taylor’s Version)”
The track, from “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” views love through a realistic lens. The song goes through small signs of love, telling a story of the building of a relationship. The love described is not flawless or perfect, and Swift sings about “burnt toast,” fighting and talking through disagreements. The lyrics illustrate a love you can feel in comfortable silences and true love that helps conquer the fears and insecurities formed in the past.
2. “Sweet Nothing”
This track from “Midnights” is about a person that feels like a safe haven. Swift talks about the cruelty she sees in a world full of selfishness, inconsideration and artificiality in stark contrast to a lover that feels peaceful, genuine, and rare.
3. “Timeless (Taylor’s Version)”
One of the vault tracks from “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” this song tells the story of Swift being reminded of her lover while looking at old photos in an antique shop. She describes a love that is unstoppable and bigger than just something situational or convenient. The chorus ends with the lines, “Cause I believe that we were supposed to find this / So, even in a different life, you still would’ve been mine / We would’ve been timeless.”
4. “It’s Nice To Have A Friend”
This song from her 2019 “Lover” album describes a friendship that eventually evolves into romance. From the beginning, the love interest is characterized by being selfless and thoughtful: walking her home, giving her gloves in the cold, hanging out together, having honest conversations and learning to trust each other. At the end of the song, though, it becomes clear that there is more than just a friendship here. “Church bells ring, carry me home / Rice on the ground, looks like snow,” Swift sings about the love that started as a once-in-a-lifetime platonic relationship.
5. “Daylight”
Another gem from “Lover,” “Daylight” is about a love that inspires you to change for the better, especially in terms of having a new mindset. The song begins with Swift describing the “cruel” and pessimistic love she gave throughout her life, being changed upon finding a love that is more calm, pure, and right. “I once believed love would be burning red / But it’s golden, like daylight,” says Swift in the song. Junior Marshall Womer cites “Daylight” as Swift’s most romantic song.
