At an assembly last week, the 2024 Lower Dauphin High School Mini-THON committee released the theme and design of this year’s Mini-THON.
The design to be displayed on the t-shirts worn by participants at the event was made by junior Sammie Gallick, who says, “When I heard the theme for Mini-THON was the Eras of Mini-THON, I immediately thought of Taylor Swift. One of my favorite songs is called ‘mirrorball’ which is why I decided to star a disco ball as the main object of my design…I had so much fun making it and I hope everyone has so much fun at Mini-THON!”
The artwork features a magenta disco ball surrounded by polaroids showing the amount raised from past Mini-THONs, as well as the theme’s slogan: “New era, same goal.” The Taylor-Swift-themed phraseology has become a controversial topic among LD students.
According to Jacob Walsh, junior, “It’s very annoying for people who are not fans of Taylor Swift.” Walsh adds that he prefers listening to Kanye West, who he believes is a better artist.
Junior Henry Lewis agrees, calling the theme “stupid” and suggesting that “Taylor Swift should be extradited.”
Juniors Reini Patel and Lauryn Parcon, however, disagree with their disgruntled peers. “I feel so delighted,” quips Patel, smiling alongside Parcon, who says, “I love Taylor Swift.”
No matter the view on the theme, it is important to remember that Mini-THON is about the kids being supported by the Four Diamonds fund in their battle against childhood cancer.
