Texas Governor Greg Abbott has mobilized the Texas National Guard to the US-Mexico border.
Governor Abbott has ordered the state’s militia to oppose federal authority in the region, prompting calls for Biden to federalize the Lone Star State’s national guard. Other states have begun to send their national guards to Texas in support, making this a messy political situation.
The feud between Abbott and the Biden Administration began when federal border patrol agents were obstructed by the Texas National Guard, and were prevented from accessing a several-mile stretch of the border. Shortly after this, fences and razor wire were erected, and the issue was brought to the Supreme Court of the United States. The court voted 5-4 to force Texas to remove the razor wire and allow federal access, which would typically prompt a state to obey. Not Texas, however.
The Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton responded by saying that “Texas will not surrender.” Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded by claiming that “This is not over.”
This situation is likely going to be extremely messy. Texas has proclaimed that they are “protecting the country” from an “invasion.”
26 other states have pledged to aid Texas, people have called for Biden to federalize the state’s national guard, and some have even posted onto the platform formerly known as Twitter telling people to “Buy guns and ammo”, and suggesting that Texas should secede.
LD students are astounded by the issue. “This shouldn’t be happening,” Says Junior Jasmine Prieto. “This will only divide the country further than it already is.” Juniors Lauryn Parcon and Brenna Tressler agree with her. “That guy’s kind of crazy, not gonna lie.” Parcon said, referring to Texas governor Greg Abbott. “My opinion is that the Supreme Court has made some questionable decisions lately, but I feel as though people like Abbott and Paxton are responsible for the appointment of these judges, so they should accept the ruling.” Says Tressler.
It remains to be seen whether Texas will stand down or whether the Federal Government steps up to put a stop to this unruly state. This is all happening, of course, in an election year, which will further complicate an already complicated election cycle fraught with controversies, AI generated media, misinformation, extreme partisan politics, and other assorted factors.
