Azerbaijan and Armenian militaries reached a ceasefire deal to end their fighting. The conflict has been a flashpoint for decades. This is a big step towards the peace between the two countries.
The war has caused many shortages in food as well as medicine for residents of Armenia because for months Azerbaijan had a blockade blocking the road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.
The escalation of the tensions between the countries was rising in the days before the ceasefire deal. It was feared that a full scale war would resume causing a ton of destruction, also putting innocent citizens at risk.
The fighting resumed recently after the war ended in 2020 due to stronger countries, such as Russia and Turkey, joining. Russia and Turkey successfully settled the war between the countries in 2020 and also helped them reach the agreement in the ceasefire deal.
Before the ceasefire was in place, the city of Stepanakert and its surrounding area was getting bombed every couple of minutes. The residents of the city were bunkered down in bomb shelters. After the agreement the city was left with a lot of significant damage to not only cars, windows, and roads but the infrastructure of buildings.
During the two days of fighting, 32 people died, seven of those deceased were civilians and one was a child. More than 200 others were wounded, 11 of those wounded were children.
