Early ranking of the best receivers from the 2022 NFL Draft
October 6, 2022
- Romeo Doubs (Green Bay Packers)
I’ve been very high on Doubs since his time dominating at Nevada with Carson Strong. Doubs is a tremendous deep–ball threat and has been one of Aaron Rodgers’ best weapons to start the 2022 campaign. Tally and 184 yards on 19 receptions for two touchdowns (ESPN.com), Doubs is proving to have been an incredible value pick up in the fourth round of the draft. While he hasn’t gotten over the proverbial hump, dropping passes and experiencing some of the typical growing pains of a young receiver, Doubs looks like a superstar in the making. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him become an elite receiver in the very near future with the help of a great supporting cast in Green Bay. I have Doubs ranked just ahead of Atlanta’s Drake London solely due to London’s inconsistent play and similar statistics despite receiving eight more targets, a higher snap share and a higher target share (PlayerProfile.com). London has also dropped more passes (three) than Doubs (zero) (PlayerProfiler.com).
- George Pickens (Pittsburgh Steelers)
Statistics do not always tell the entire story. If one looks at just the box score, Pickens’ season would be considered solid for a rookie, but nothing to write home about. However, his impact in the run game, by making great blocks on the outside for running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, has been very impactful. There is not another rookie wide receiver in the league with the same impact as Pickens, who has also made two of the best catches fans have seen this entire season.
- Garrett Wilson (New York Jets)
Wilson was a receiver that, prior to the draft, I projected would not meet up to vast expectations. So far, he is proving me wrong in every way possible. The former Ohio State Buckeye has been a staple to a revived Jets offense that has managed to squeak out two wins in four weeks. With two touchdown receptions and 255 yards (ESPN.com), Wilson has produced well while displaying a solid route tree. He has gotten a good amount of separation from weaker corners, but his footwork and agility need to be consistently good for him to rise on this list.
- Jahan Dotson (Washington Commanders)
One of my favorite receivers in the 2022 draft class, Dotson has proved himself as an elite receiver and is easily the most talented wideout of this group. A lack of targets through the opening stretch of games makes it difficult to cement him as the number one receiver in the class. Delivering when targeted, scoring four touchdowns and hauling in a plethora of absurd catches, Dotson has proven why he must be a primary target for Carson Wentz down the line. It would not surprise me for Dotson to claim the number one spot in a matter of weeks.
- Chris Olave (New Orleans Saints)
As of now, it is obvious that Olave is at the top of the rookie receiver totem pole. He is not necessarily the cream of the crop, but with 335 yards on just 21 receptions (ESPN.com), the eleventh overall selection must be the current best of this class. He is quick with great footwork and has produced surprisingly consistently whilst in a loaded New Orleans receiving room. As mentioned above, I do not think that he will stay in the top spot for long. With that being said, Olave has had a fantastic start to his NFL career and should be a star for a long time to come.
