March 5, 2022
(All rankings via the 2/28 Inside Lacrosse Media Poll)
#17 Delaware (4-2) vs. #16 Michigan (7-0)
An early start from Delaware was not enough, as the Wolverines clawed back immediately. Strong second and third quarters put this one out of reach for Delaware, with the Wolverines ending as the victors by a score of 18-8.
#9 North Carolina (4-1) vs. #19 Denver (3-2)
Tewaaraton favorite Chris Gray proved why he is the best player in the nation. Gray’s six goals (including the game-winner) and two assists guided the Tar Heels past the Pioneers 17-16.
#10 Duke (7-2) vs. Richmond (3-2)
Four different players recorded three points as the Blue Devils’ offense was too much for Richmond to handle. Luke Frankeny’s five points kept Richmond in it, but Duke pulled away 14-8.
Vermont (2-3) vs. Bryant (2-3)
Bryant attackman Marc O’Rourke is ranked, by Paul Carcaterra, as the ninth-best player in the 2022 PLL Draft class. However, O’Rourke was shut down by the Catamount defense, only registering two points as the Vermont attack took over in a 16-6 win.
High Point (3-3) vs. Bellarmine (1-7)
Asher Nolting’s six points and Brayden Mayea’s five goals set the tone as Bellarmine’s defense could not stop the Panthers’ offensive surge. High Point dominated en route to a 15-4 win.
#4 Rutgers (6-0) vs. Stony Brook (4-1)
Maybe the best game of the weekend (just behind North Carolina vs. Denver), the Stony Brook Sea Wolves gave Rutgers a run for their money, but ultimately came up short, 17-16, thanks to a stellar performance from Scarlet Knights’ goalkeeper Colin Kirst.
#11 Cornell (4-0) vs. #6 Ohio State (4-1)
A good start for the Buckeyes proved to be not enough, with CJ Kirst putting up five points en route to a 14-11 Big Red victory.
#18 Princeton (3-1) vs. #3 Georgetown (4-1)
Easily the biggest upset of the weekend, the Tigers stunned a rolling Georgetown team, locking down a blazing hot offense and tearing up the Hoya defense, in part due to five goals from standout Junior, Alex Slusher to seal the 10-8 win.
Towson (3-3) vs. UMBC (1-2)
Johns Hopkins transfer Luke Shilling tore it up, registering four goals (including the eventual game-winner) and two assists to lead the Tigers to a big 11-10 win over their in-state rivals.
Loyola (MD) (1-4) vs. Lafayette (2-3)
The Greyhounds finally got their first win of the season, but Lafayette did not make it easy. Peter Lehman and John Mathes combined for eight points to keep Lafayette’s hopes alive. Loyola’s Aidan Olmstead was ultimately the difference-maker, providing five goals and creating another to secure the 14-12 win.
#1 Maryland (5-0) vs. #7 Notre Dame (1-2)
As expected, this was a game for the ages. Pat Kavanagh delivered plenty of highlights and Logan Wisnauskas set up some of his own on Maryland’s end of the field. Wisnauskas and co. got the last laugh, however, with the Irish not having enough to power past the Terrapins, falling 11-9.
Lehigh (1-2) vs. Navy (3-2)
The Mountain Hawks came away triumphant for the first time all season in a solid matchup. After close matchups, the high-powered Lehigh offense was enough to derail Navy, who almost came away with their fourth straight win in 2022.
#5 Penn (2-1) vs. Penn State (2-3)
Sam Handley and Dylan Gergar lived up to the hype, combining for seven points in the 10-9 Penn victory. Hershey High School alumni, Mark Sickler, had four points for the Nittany Lions, but it was not enough to get past Handley and the Wildcats.
