The 2022 PLL Offseason Begins With a Bang: Analyzing the Blockbuster Trade Between Chaos LC and Cannons LC

Ethan K.

On Tuesday, January 18, Chaos Lacrosse Club shocked the lacrosse world by trading star midfielder, Jake Froccaro, to Cannons Lacrosse Club in exchange for attackman Andrew Kew and a 2023 third round draft pick (that becomes a second if the Cannons appear in the 2022 PLL Championship).

In three years as a member of the Chaos, Froccaro recorded 47 points in 23 games, putting him at just over two points per game (PremierLacrosseLeague.com).

Chaos Head Coach, Andy Towers, has adapted his team to a more ‘box’ style team, surrounding his playmakers with great indoor players with quick hands. The decision translated into major success, as Chaos won their first ever PLL Championship over the Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club, who were the reigning champions. Towers would love to keep that trend going, and as a result Chaos needed to trade Froccaro, who did not even suit up for Chaos’ run to the championship.

Froccaro, a strong outside shooter and dodger, has never played the indoor game and thus found his role slowly fading with the club.

However, the Cannons Lacrosse Club, who will be the recipient of Froccaro, will get a 2021 PLL All-Star and a top offensive midfielder in the league when played in the proper role.

As for the Chaos, they will receive a very sharp left-handed finisher in Kew.

In 2021, Kew played in just six games but tallied 13 points, including a four game stretch in which Kew notched all 13 of his points. As a member of the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the since-folded Major League Lacrosse, Kew recorded 47 points in just two seasons (PremierLacrosseLeague.com). Kew has a history of being a great shooter in the indoor game, and he is a perfect fit for the Chaos offense.

Not only will Chaos receive Kew, who, based on the schemes and personnel that they like, will be much more of an asset for them, but the reigning champions will also get a third round draft pick to grow their team even more in the 2023 PLL Draft.

Overall, both teams are winners with this trade. The Cannons will get a strong midfielder to replace Paul Rabil and Chaos will receive a good scheme fit that will rack up goals with ease on their attack line.
